Young Gilas frizzles against Canadian in Jones Cup opener

Clearly, fighting against the tall and tough team of Canada wasn’t easy for young Gilas yet the Pilipinas were really good for half a quarter but collapsed against Canadian at a 77-90 decision in the 39th Williams Jones Cup opener in Taipei at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall on Saturday.

Gilas started off slow against the experienced Canadians, a team filled with stars from the National Baskeball League of Canada. The Gilas however recovered well to notch a slim lead of 20-19 after the first quarter.

But, the team surprisingly made 22 turnovers and 26 fouls in the second that allowed Canadians to pull away and start a 10-point lead after the break, 44-34. Thereafter, the Philippines team couldn’t fill the 8-point gap till the last.

Coach Chot Reyes was convinced, though, that the young Gilas players did well in the game.

Coach Chot Reyes, despite the loss was showed confidence in the team and looked satisfied with the performance –

“We’re very satisfied with our effort. I thought we came out, played hard and competed well,”

“We knew coming in that we’re in for a tough battle. Just look at their credentials. They’re all bonafide Division I players with some European league veterans. But I like the effort of our guys against them.” said Reyes.

Gilas Pilipinas were lead by Kiefer Ravena who came off the bench adding 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. While Ray Parks settled for 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Despite coming to the field after just about 4 hours of practice session, the Canadian players proved too tough for Gilas to handle.

Canadian Coach Kyle Julius, said

“I really didn’t know what to expect coming over here,” “But they played hard and it resulted in a win.”

Gilas Pilipinas will clash Chinese-Taipei A next on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
