Petron stuns F2 to reclaim PSL All-Filipino crown

After two years of struggle the Petron Blaze Spikers finally reclaimed the Philippine Superliga All Filipino crown by winning over the five-set thriller Game two against F2 Logistics, 26-24, 24-26, 24-26, 25-23, 15-11, at Filoil Flying V Centre on Thursday.

Petron claimed the All-Filipino title which they last won in 2015, while Blaze will have to work hard next year to claim their two-year championship title.

Though it wasn’t easy as each of the first four set played required the match to extend to next round. F2 Logistics successfully broke the four-point lead to one, 23-22, the Blaze then got a off-the-bench clutch from Carmela Tunay to arrive at set point. But it was middle blocker Remy Palma that sent the match to fifth set and glorified Petron to claim the title.

In the deciding set, national team member Ces Molina scored 5 of the last 8 points for Petron to put an end to F2.

Coach Shaq Delos Santos said the combination of Molina, Mika Reyes, the MVP Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, and Rhea Dimaculangan boiled down to Petron’s constant communication factor –

“Communication is very important to us, and every time we practice we talk about everything,” said Delos Santos. “The whole team, the players, the coaching staff, everyone talks.”

“And the result has been so beautiful because everything we planned has panned out.”

The veteran Most Valuable Player Aiza Maizo dropped 14 points while UST standout Cherry Rodina played a solid game off the bench, nailing a team-high 16 points.

Bernadeth Pons and Molina had 12 and 12 points, respectively for Petron.

Cargo Movers were led by Galang with game-high 20 points with Aby Maraño and Mary Joy Baron added 27 points combining.

“That’s it, we can’t do anything but accept what just happened,” said F2’s middle blocker Aby Maraño after the depressing loss.
