Perez drives Lyceum to down San Beda

 

Lyceum of the Philippines University lived up to the expectations of fans as LPU stunned San Beda College, 96-91, and captured the solo lead in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 93 basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City on Friday.

CJ Perez exploded for LPU to have the edge early. The 22-year-old forward who left Ateneo for Lyceum poured 24 points, in the last quarter for its first win over the Lions after season 89. He also added 4 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block to seize the win.

Reymar Caduyac showed no mercy on the San Beda by dropping back-to-back drives with just 1:03 remaining in the game. Overall, he added 16 markers, 7 assists and 3 boards.

The game tied at 89-all with 2.47 remaining, Lyceum locked down on defense to get hold off San Beda who missed their last 7 field goal attempts. Javee Mocon drilled two freebies with 56.7 seconds remaining.

Coach Topex Robinson after the match said –

“To play against San Beda, it’s gonna take a lot of grit, a lot of perseverance, and never giving up,”

“But it’s not about me, but it’s about the players. We just kept on playing and we just kept on grinding.”

“Nobody wins a championship the second game. Teams will start playing us harder. We just have to be always prepared and keep on being hungry,” he added.

Mike Nzeusseu notched in a double-double with his 18 points and 13 rebounds, also rookie Jaycee Marcelino added 14 markers, 6 boards, 2 dimes, and 2 steals.

In the surprising loss, guard Robert Bolick paced Lions with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Clint Doliguez contributed 19 points and 7 boards.
