Ginebra beats Meralco in a thriller

The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings delivered a 90-89 win over the Meralco Bolts in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday at Ynares Center.

In a capacity crowd, the Kings showed resiliency in a tactical end game in which LA Tenorio found his way to score. Furthermore, Joe Devance scored also in the closing seconds to help the Kings.

The Bolts fought hard until the end by having a chance to win with Ginebra’s Justin Browlee muffed two freethrows with six seconds left as Ginebra leads 90-89. Alex Stephenson got the rebound but the Bolts couldn’t capitalize on a fastbreak play intended for Cliff Hodge.

Brownlee and Tenorio each scored 22 points to help the Gin Kings climbed on top of the standings with a the possibility of gaining the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Ginebra has to beat Mahindra to get the top spot in the playoffs.

“This set us up to get the No. 1 seed. Top seeding doesn’t guarantee a championship but it gets you to a good road in the playoffs,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

Ginebra started strong with a 12-2 early lead but Meralco pushed its way back and gained the lead after first quarter at 24-22. The Bolts increased their lead, 48-42, at the half.

With the ability of the Kings to bounce back, they rallied in the third quarter to recapture the lead, 74-69.
