Gilas trounces India in the Jones Cup 2017

Gilas Pilipinas clobbered Indian, 101-70, to capture its fifth victory in the William Jones Cup 2017 on Saturday at the Taipei Heping Gymnasium.

Matthew Wright was perfect outside the arc in a 5-for-5 shooting and finishing 18 points to lead Gilas. Wright has been quiet in the past two games but he exploded against the shallow defense of India.

Gilas pulled of a remarkable 17-for-36 shooting outside the arc and the the team reached the century mark. Von Pessumal contributed 14 points and drilled in four three-pointers. Almond Vosotros added 14 points to help Gilas also.

“The central theme going to this game is that we want to respect the opponent because we know India has some good players,” said head coach Chot Reyes. “But at the same time, we also want to respect the game.”

Amjyot Singh Gill scored 22 points to lead the winless India.

Because of the early lead, Mike Myers and Kiefer Ravena stayed much on the bench allowing other players to enjoy the game.

Gilas record is currently at 5-3, fourth in the standings.
