Gilas Pilipinas falls to South Korea

Gilas Pilipinas suffered an 83-72 loss to South Korea in the continuation of the Jones Cup 2017 on Wednesday, at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium.

The Koreans utilized the clamping defense to deny the Filipinos their outside shooting by making only 1-for-26. Thus, eliminating the strength of Gilas would mean trouble and the Koreans were successful in subduing the Filipinos.

Gilas tried to bounce back from 16 points, cutting it into four points in the fourth quarter but with no avail as South Korea was poised to weather the storm. Mike Myers posted 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead Gilas Pilipinas.

Because of the lack of outside production, Gilas couldn’t shake up South Korea. Gilas missed the first 11 outside the arc shots the paved the way for South Korea to build a lead. The only shot went in from outside the arc was from Jio Jalalon who finished with 18 points. Moreover, Christian Standardinger finished with 16 points and five rebounds.

Meanwhile, Matthew Wright had only four points, considering that he was the leading scorer in the past three games. Kiefer Ravena added eight points, five assists and three rebounds.

Sekeun Oh and Lee Junghyun dished out 14 points apiece to lead South Korea.

With the loss, Gilas record falls to 3-2, and the chances of winning the Jones Cup evaporated.
