Gilas overwhelms Japan in Jones Cup

Christian Standhardinger showed domination to push Gilas in a 100-85 victory over Japan in the Jones Cup Invitational Tuesday, in Taipei.

The Fil-German bigman had 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead all the Filipinos in dispatching the Japanese especially in the fourth quarter. Standhardinger was part of the line up that outscored the Japanese 34-19 in the final quarter.

With the outside shooting of Japan clicking, Gilas couldn’t make the separation as the game was tied at 66 before entering the fourth. Gilas defensive intensity was applied to succumb the offense of Japan enroute to a victory.

The Japanese were threatening for a comeback by cutting their deficit to six but Gilas’ Matthew Wright delivered a three-pointer with 3:46 left for Gilas to have a breathing room, 82-73. In the next possession, guard Kiefer Ravena extended the lead and Gilas never looked back. Ravena finished with 11 points while Jio Jalalon added 11 also. Meanwhile, Mike Myers played with power with his 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Gilas will play South Korea on Wednesday. This game could determine if Gilas will have still a shot of the title or not. A defeat will bring Gilas with two losses while Korea and Canada are still undefeated.
