Gilas beats Iran, ends 4th in Jones Cup

Gilas Pilipinas overwhelmed Iran, 90-82, to close out the run in the 39th William Jones Cup Invitational on Sunday in Taipei, Taiwan.

Mike Myers led Gilas with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Matthew Wright added 20 points. Christian Stanhardinger contributed 13 points and four rebounds. Gilas started and strong and never looked back as the continuity of the attacks inside and outside dismantled the defense of Iran.

For Iran, Sajjad Pazrofteh and Masoud Soleymani combined for 42 points. Iran couldn’t match the intensity of the Philippine team at all especially in the fourth quarter.

In a disappointing Cup, Gilas ended up with a 6-3 record, behind Canada, South Korea and Lithuania. However, with a young roster, Gilas Pilipinas future is bright. Wright, 26, will have a clear path to success in the international scene. Wright averaged 14 points and was 25-for-58 from outside the arc in the William Jones Cup.

While millions of Filipino fans want to see Kobe Paras play more time, the youngster will have a place in the coming years for Gilas Pilipinas.
